Own App Store Listing vs Branded Shared App: What White Label Means
Vendors sell two different things as a white-label gym app: your logo inside their shared app, or your own app in the App Store and Google Play. Here is what each one needs, why the prices differ and the questions to ask before you sign.

Short answer: "white label" covers two different products
In fitness software, "white label" is used for two different things. With a branded shared app, members download the vendor's app and see your logo and colours once they join your gym. With your own store listing, members download an app published under your gym's name in the App Store and Google Play, with your icon and push notifications from your brand.
The shared app is faster to launch and cheaper, and needs nothing from Apple or Google. Your own listing needs developer accounts, store review and ongoing updates, so vendors usually charge more for it. Before you compare prices, ask every vendor which of the two they are selling.
Two definitions to pin down first
The two models share the same features inside the app, but they are published differently.
- Branded shared app: one app, published by the software vendor under the vendor's name, that switches to your gym's logo, colours and content after a member signs in or joins your gym.
- Own store listing (native white-label app): a separate app built from the vendor's platform but published as your app, with its own name, icon, screenshots and description in the App Store and Google Play.
A third option, an app developed from scratch just for you, is a different decision with a different budget. We cover it in white label vs custom-built gym app. This page stays with the two things vendors most often mean when they say white label.
Side by side: what changes for you and your members
The difference shows up in the store, on the phone's home screen and in who does the work behind each release, not in the booking screen.
| What changes | Branded shared app | Own store listing |
|---|---|---|
| Name members search for in the store | The vendor's app name | Your gym's name |
| Icon on the home screen | The vendor's icon | Your icon |
| Inside the app | Your logo, colours and content | Your logo, colours and content |
| Push notifications | Arrive from the vendor's app | Arrive under your brand |
| Apple and Google developer accounts | Not needed | Needed (yours or the vendor's, depending on the vendor) |
| Store review | The vendor's single app is reviewed once for everyone | Your app goes through Apple and Google review on every release |
| Time to launch | As soon as your account is set up | Longer: build, store listing, review |
| Store ratings and reviews | Belong to the vendor's app | Belong to your app |
| Typical cost | Included in the base plan | Higher plan, add-on, setup fee or quote |
What your own store listing actually requires
An app under your name needs a publisher account on each store, a complete store listing, a review by Apple and Google and someone who keeps it updated. A good vendor does most of this for you, but you should know what is happening in your name.
Developer accounts
Apple publishes apps through the Apple Developer Program and Google through the Google Play Console. Both charge a fee to register, and an organisation account usually needs company verification (Apple, for example, asks organisations for a D-U-N-S number). Apple's App Review Guidelines also say that apps built from a template or app-generation service should be submitted by the business that provides the app's content. That is why many white-label vendors ask the gym to open its own developer account and add the vendor as a team member, while others publish under their own account.
The store listing
You need an app name, icon, screenshots, a description, a support contact, a privacy policy and the privacy disclosures both stores require (App Privacy details on Apple, the Data safety section on Google Play). Once the app is live, the listing, its ratings and its reviews are tied to your name.
Review and updates
Every new version of a native app passes store review before members receive it. Content that lives on the server, such as the class schedule, packages, training plans and messages, changes instantly without a new release. New features, design changes and fixes for new iOS and Android versions need a new build, so ask how often the vendor ships updates to every customer app and who deals with a rejection.
Why your own listing costs more
It costs more because the vendor maintains one app per customer instead of one app for everyone.
With a shared app, a single release reaches every gym at once. With own listings, the vendor builds, signs, submits and monitors a separate app for each customer on two stores, and answers each review. That work is why own-store apps usually sit on a higher plan, carry a setup fee or are quoted per account. For typical price structures, read what a white-label fitness app really costs and the 2026 fitness software pricing index, which follows the method described in how we compare fitness software.
When you compare quotes, check four things: whether the store app is included or an add-on, whether there is a setup fee, who pays the developer account fees and what happens to the app if you leave.
What members actually experience
Inside the app, most members cannot tell the two apart: both show your logo, colours, schedule and member card. The difference is around the app.
- Finding it: with a shared app you send a download link or tell members the vendor's name; with your own listing they search for your gym.
- Home screen: the vendor's icon or yours, sitting next to the other apps they use every day.
- Notifications: a class reminder from the vendor's app or from your gym.
- Trust: some members hesitate to install an app with a name they do not recognise; others do not care as long as booking works.
Best for and not the right fit
Choose by how much store presence is worth to your brand, not by the feature list, because the features inside the app are usually the same.
A branded shared app is best for single-location gyms and studios, owners who want to go live quickly and budgets where the app is not the main brand touchpoint. It is not the right fit for chains and premium clubs whose members expect to find the club by name in the store, or for marketing built around "download our app".
Your own store listing is best for multi-location gyms, premium clubs, brands that promote the app in their marketing and owners who want store ratings under their own name. It is not the right fit for owners who expect to switch vendors soon, who do not want developer accounts in their name or whose budget is better spent on coaching and marketing.
Vendor checklist: questions to ask before you sign
Ask every vendor these questions in writing. The answers tell you which kind of white label you are buying and what you keep if you leave.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is the app published under my gym's name in the App Store and Google Play, or is it your app with my branding? | This is the core distinction behind every other answer. |
| Whose developer account is the listing on? | It decides who controls the listing, ratings and reviews. |
| Who handles submission, review and rejections? | Store review is ongoing work, not a one-off step. |
| How often do updates reach my app, and does it follow new iOS and Android versions? | An app that stops being updated slowly breaks. |
| Are push notifications sent under my brand? | Notifications are what members see most often. |
| Is it a member app only, or do trainers and staff use it too? | Many own-store apps cover members only. |
| Is it included, an add-on or a setup fee, and who pays the store fees? | This is where quotes differ most. |
| If I leave, what happens to the app, its listing and my members' data? | Exit terms are hard to negotiate later. |

How Trainera handles both options
Trainera offers both models, and the plan decides which one you get.
- Gyms on Core: members use the Trainera app in your gym's colours and logo, with a QR member card, bookings for the next two weeks, training and nutrition plans, progress tracking, messages and push notifications. Core starts with a 7-day trial.
- Gyms on White Label: the same member app as your gym's own native iOS and Android app under your name, published to the App Store and Google Play by Trainera, with push notifications under your brand, store submission and review handled by Trainera and a dedicated account manager. It is a member app: trainers and staff keep using Trainera.
- Trainers: on paid plans, clients see the trainer's branding inside the Trainera client app. An own app in the stores under the trainer's name is part of Enterprise, quoted per account. More in white-label fitness app for trainers.
| Gym plan (United States) | Member app | Monthly price |
|---|---|---|
| Core | Trainera app in your colours and logo | $149 |
| White Label | Your own app in the App Store and Google Play | $299 |
Prices checked on 25 September 2026 from the Trainera pricing page. Both plans include unlimited members with no per-member fee and no setup fee; other countries have their own local prices on the pricing page.
Trainera is not the right fit if you need an app built from scratch with features no platform offers, or if you want trainers and staff to work inside your own store app as well. For every screen by role on both plans, see Trainera for gyms: Core vs White Label.
